BCT vs HSK — what's the difference?
The HSK tests general Mandarin proficiency across everyday topics. The BCT tests how well you use Mandarin specifically in business contexts: workplace communication, commercial transactions, business correspondence, and professional social interactions. The vocabulary is more specialised — contracts, negotiations, reports, and presentations — and the scenarios are drawn from the business world rather than daily life.
The BCT comes in two forms: BCT(A), which tests listening and reading, and BCT(B), which adds speaking and writing. Most candidates sit BCT(A) first. BCT(B) is for those who need to demonstrate full four-skills business proficiency — common for senior professionals and MBA candidates.
BCT (A) — Receptive skills
Listening and reading in business contexts. Scenarios include: phone calls and meetings; reading business emails, reports, and announcements; understanding instructions and data. About 90 minutes total. Results in a score that maps to five BCT levels.
BCT (B) — Full four skills
Listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The speaking section includes role-play scenarios (handling a client enquiry, presenting data). The writing section requires composing a business email or memo. About 150 minutes total. The most comprehensive business Mandarin credential available.
