HSK Level 6

What HSK 6 represents

HSK 6 is the highest level of the original HSK framework and corresponds to C2 on the CEFR scale — near-native mastery. With over 5,000 words and the ability to use complex, idiomatic, and literary Chinese, HSK 6 holders can read virtually any mainstream text, understand any broadcast, and write with the fluency expected of an educated Chinese speaker. It is the gold standard Mandarin credential recognised by every Chinese university, employer, and government body.

Importantly, HSK 6 does not test the full range of Chinese vocabulary — educated native speakers know 50,000–100,000 words. What it does test is command of the 5,000 most important words used in educated, formal contexts. Passing HSK 6 means you have mastered the core of modern standard Mandarin and can function at a professional level in virtually any Chinese-language environment.

Test format

Chengyu — the four-character idioms

成语 (chéngyǔ) are four-character set phrases derived from classical Chinese stories and history. They appear in HSK 6 reading passages and are expected at this level. Each one packs the meaning of a whole story into four characters — 马到成功 (mǎ dào chéng gōng — "horse arrives, success achieved" — meaning "instant success") or 一石二鸟 (yī shí èr niǎo — "one stone two birds" — equivalent to "kill two birds with one stone").

Learning chengyu is one of the most culturally rewarding aspects of advanced Mandarin study. They connect you to 3,000 years of Chinese history and literature, and using them correctly in writing or conversation marks you as genuinely sophisticated in the language. Aim to learn 5–10 per week from HSK 5 level onwards.
