Three HSKK levels
HSKK Beginner
Corresponds to HSK 1–2 vocabulary. Tests: repeat sentences you hear; read sentences aloud; answer simple questions about yourself and daily life. Total time: approximately 17 minutes. Suitable for learners after 3–6 months of study.
HSKK Intermediate
Corresponds to HSK 3–4 vocabulary. Tests: repeat sentences; read passages aloud; answer questions on daily and social topics with 2–3 sentence responses. Total time: approximately 21 minutes. Most commonly taken alongside HSK 3 or 4.
HSKK Advanced
Corresponds to HSK 5–6 vocabulary. Tests: read a passage; answer questions requiring extended responses of 3–5+ sentences; give a 2–3 minute monologue on a prompted topic. Total time: approximately 24 minutes. Requires genuine speaking fluency.
Why take the HSKK?
The standard HSK tests only reading and listening at lower levels and adds writing at higher levels — but never tests speaking. The HSKK fills this gap. For learners who want to demonstrate complete Mandarin ability, taking both HSK and HSKK at the corresponding level provides a full-skills certification package.
Practically, some Chinese university programs specify HSKK alongside HSK as an admission requirement. It also serves as a useful personal benchmark — many learners find their speaking lags significantly behind their reading and listening, and the HSKK provides structured motivation to close that gap.
Speaking exam preparation techniques
Use your phone's voice memo app. Read a short Chinese text aloud and record it. Play it back critically — listen for tone accuracy, pronunciation of difficult initials (zh, ch, sh, r, x, q), and unnatural pauses. The gap between how you think you sound and how you actually sound is often significant and illuminating.
Listen to a native Mandarin recording and simultaneously repeat what you hear, matching the rhythm, tone, and speed exactly. This is the single most effective technique for improving Mandarin speaking fluency. Start with slow, clear recordings and gradually increase speed. ChinesePod and Mandarin Corner provide ideal material.
HSKK question topics are predictable: your daily routine, your studies/work, your hobbies, your family, your hometown, technology, travel. Prepare 3–5 sentence answers for each topic. Rehearse until they're fluent. These prepared answers form the skeleton of your spoken responses even when questions vary slightly.
HSKK gives you limited time to prepare and respond. Practice giving 30-second and 60-second responses to random topics with a timer running. The ability to speak coherently under a countdown is a distinct skill from general fluency and requires specific practice.
